Make Your Own Homemade Non Toxic Cleaning Supplies
I’ve been making my own non toxic homemade cleaning products for as long as I can remember.
As you probably know, the chemical junk lining the store shelves simply isn’t necessary to get your home surfaces clean.
Here’s how you can make your own non toxic cleaning supplies kit.
BASIC HOMEMADE CLEANING PRODUCTS – THERE ARE ONLY 3
To clean you home, there are 3 basics that you need. That is a spray cleaner, an abrasive powder cleaner and a good old fashioned soap – with some water of course.
1. Spray Cleaner - Making your own homemade spray cleaner is so easy that it’s hard to believe the hoards of expensive chemical spray cleaners on the shelves.
I have used this to clean any surface that needs cleaning for as long as I remember. You can even use a recycled sprayer if you have one. Just fill it almost full with water and then add an essential oil or essential oil blend of your choosing.
Shake and spray. It smells great too. In fact, you can even use it as room freshener although I find that a finer mist works better for this, so you may want a different one.
2. Abrasive Cleaning Powder - I use this to clean sinks, showers and toilets.
Mix 2/3 cup baking soda with 1/3 cup citric acid.
Add a few drops essential oils.
Shake well to disperse the essential oils.
This will give some abrasive cleaning power as well as the bubbling action of the citric acid and baking soda together. Store in a dry place.
TIP - Use baking soda and essential oils alone to deodorize your carpet. Do a spot test first and vacuum it up after letting it sit about 20 minutes.
3. Handmade Soap Cleaner – You can buy this online or make your own. A bar soap with a high percentage of coconut oil is an extremely effective cleaner. You can use this for tougher cleaning jobs. I’ve even used it for a highly effective, grease cutting dish soap.
Just rub the bar on your wet cleaning cloth for instant suds and dirt removal. You can use it to get your stainless steel sinks sparkling clean or clean your plastic or bathroom sinks with the cleaning powder above. If you prefer, you can buy liquid castile soap instead.
That’s it!
I very seldom need more than this to clean my house.
A FEW HOUSE CLEANING TOOLS THAT MAY COME IN HANDY
1. Cleaning caddy - Keep it all together so that you can carry everything you need from room to room and have it available to you in one place.
2. Natural sea sponge - I bought a bag of these for crafts and have found them to be one of the best cleaning tools that I have. They are extremely effective at removing dirt from almost any surface.
3. Cleaning brushes - I have an old toothbrush for cleaning between taps and other small places, a long handled body brush for cleaning the tub (it has softer bristles so that it doesn’t scratch) and a regular, stronger bristled cleaning brush for surfaces that need a good scrub.
4. Micro fiber cloths - Great for dusting surfaces. You can get them for windows too. I also have a good feather duster that is great for a quick dusting of ornaments or things with a detailed surface.
5. Rags - Old bathrobes or towels make especially good cleaning rags, but you can use almost anything. Designate one for cleaning toilet surfaces that can be thrown out or rinsed separately.
A FEW NON TOXIC EXTRAS YOU MAY WANT TO ADD
1. Oxyclean – I buy the powder and often use it with some essential oils if I have heavier jobs requiring a pail of water such as washing floors and walls. It can also be used in laundry.
2. Vinegar - A great natural degreaser, rinse agent and deodorizer.
3. Magic Eraser – This is a handy little sponge that works especially well on tough stains or hard to remove spots on walls, toys and ovens.
NOTE: Always remember to research and observe safety rules when you are using essential oils or making handmade soap or other homemade cleaning supplies.
Now that you are armed with a variety of homemade non toxic cleaning supplies to truly clean your home, it’s time to get busy.
