Mango Butter – Saturday Surprise Special

When I opened up the Mango Butter and the fresh scent wafted out, I knew I had to try a body butter with it. I liked the White Refined Shea/Monoi de Tahiti Body Butter Recipe that I made a few weeks ago so well that I decided to tweak that recipe.

I’m glad I did, it’s my new favourite (until the next time I decide to start playing).

So it seemed the obvious thing to introduce Mango Butter as the Saturday Surprise Special this week.

Here’s a little about it.

ABOUT MANGO BUTTER

Color- Slightly Off White
Scent- Fresh – blends well with citrus. Note: this is not a fruity traditional mango scent. Mango butter is taken from the kernel of the Mango seed. Most if not all mango scented items are fragrance oils.
Saponification Value- 189
Melting point- 101-102 degrees

Mango Butter is said to be helpful in regenerative activity and to restore flexibility and reduce degeneration of skin cells. It’s a favourite of dermatologists for treatment of wrinkles – it’s said that a noticeable difference in 4 – 6 weeks of daily use.

A few other things you can use mango butter for are minor wounds and rough dry skin (it helps to keep the skin supple and provides a protective barrier – this also helps to prevent scarring), stretch marks, excema and psoriasis.

I like it because it feels amazingly silky and smooth, soaks in very well and it’s almost like a clear canvass – it can be tweaked in many different ways by adding essential oils, carrier oils or clays etc.

Organic Refined Shea Butter is a gift for those of you who are looking for many of the benefits of using shea butter but need something with no odour so that you can work from a clean slate to scent with your own essential oils.

The pure white colour is also another really nice feature if you are aiming for a white finished product.

And did I mention consistency? I love it. It’s thick and creamy and absorbs amazingly well.

There are no chemicals added during the refinement process, so while it will remove some of the things that make unrefined shea butter famous, it does not have harmful additives or residue to interfere with your focus on creating a pure, skin loving totally awesome end product.

Generally, I prefer to use the unrefined version of almost anything if I can, but in this case, I consider Organic Refined Shea Butter to be a very beneficial ingredient that gives lots of creative room to manouver.

And since it’s organic, that makes it even better.

I often use it straight but there are a lot of things you can do with it.

I put together a really simple and quick recipe for a body butter that uses Monoi de Tahiti for scent and a bit of Fractionated Coconut Oil to make it a little softer and spreadable. I did two versions – one with Natrasorb and one without. You can find more about that on the recipe page.

Black Cocoa Butter seems the perfect thing for homemade Halloween soap and skincare recipes so it was a perfect choice for this week’s Saturday Surprise Special.

INFORMATION ON BLACK COCOA BUTTER

Black Cocoa Butter is created right after the pod of the cocoa plant has germinated. The beans inside the pod are roasted, carbonating the shoots inside to create it’s dark, rich chocolate colour.

Black Cocoa Butter is slightly softer than other cocoa butters, and absorbs very quickly into the skin.

Use in skin care formulations requiring a thickening agent that will also create a smoothing & moisturizing effect on the skin.

Physical Specifications

Scent: Smells like cocoa to me. NOTE: The scent isn’t overwhelming and probably won’t come through in final product. Does not come through in soap.

Colour: Cocoa – Dark brown (I sometimes call it Dark Cocoa Butter for this reason).

Absorption: Absorbs easily into skin

Benefits: Great for use as a softening, moisturizing & thickening agent in soaps & other skin care formulations.

Gives a unique colour – excellent for summer time skin care products if you are wanting to make a dark brown product – or use just a little to control the depth of the final product colour.

I like to use cocoa butters in general for their powdery feel – this one has a totally decadent smoothness too it as well.

Besides, it’s just really cool! No cocoa butter collection is complete without black cocoa butter.

Cocoa Butter is often used to help with the prevention of stretch marks. Rich in Vitamin E & anti-oxidants.

Practical Uses…

Nice if used in oils such as olive, jojoba or avocado. Or for a really yummy scent, try it with virgin coconut oil.

Dark Cocoa Butter is like any other cocoa butter – you can use it to moisturize your skin and help with the prevention of stretch marks during pregnancy or any time that rapid weight gain (or loss!) is predicted.

Great for use in recipes when a thicker or harder texture is desired. May also help to counteract against the sticky texture of certain fats, such as shea butter.

Storage Recommendations

Store Dark Cocoa Butter in a tightly sealed container, out of direct sunlight. Will have a shelf-life of up to 3 years under proper storage conditions.
