Natural Cream for Sensitive Skin

Posted on May 7, 2007

Hi Jan,

I am a fellow Canadian — thrilled to see this site! I have very
sensitive skin and have allergies and eczema… I am also a natural
girl and wanting to get away from all the crap and additives in
commercial skincare. I am wanting to make my own skin care cream
(ASAP — because my face looks horrible) but don’t know where to
begin…

I tried to sign up for your newsletter and get the aroma download
and kept getting errors… any help would be appreciated.

If you have any ideas on a cream that might be good — I would
appreciate it!

My problem is that I know some of the ingredients I want to use –
but don’t know amounts or the theory/chemistry behind stuff.

These are some of the ingredients I would like to use:

honey
avocado oil (if I can find some and don’t react)
shea butter (if I can find some and don’t react)
cocoa butter (if I can find some and don’t react)
jojoba oil (if I can find some and don’t react)
Vitamin E

I bought organic virgin coconut oil and my face got really really
really itchy and I had to take it off.

Do you have any ideas?

Thanks!!

L.

Hi L.
Obviously the main problem for you is finding ingredients that you
don’t react to, it must be a major challenge. So the first thing
would have to be to do a test patch with the ingredients
individually to see what happens.

What are you primarily using the cream for (dryness, flaking skin,
acne, soothing etc)

My concern with a cream is that if you have problems with the
straight oils (as in the coconut, if it was organic it probably
wasn’t refined, if it was refined, that may have been the problem,
do you know what kind of coconut oil it was?) that the emulsifying
wax may cause problems.

It is possible that you could make something gentle with cellulose
gum
as the emulsifier. It would be more like a conditioning gel than a cream though.

I have a Make It Yourself Cream and Lotion kit in the works. It will be on the website soon as well as the instant download option.

I am also putting together some 1/2oz assortment trial packs for skin care oils. Let me know if you have any preferences (note if you are reading this before May 20, cast your vote in the comments section below)

Or there is info on making creams as well as ingredients and other
things in the Soap Naturally Book.
