Does Anyone Else Find This Disturbing?

Posted on May 9, 2007

I just turned on the radio to hear the weather and Muskoka has got a smog warning already.

This warning just started turning up on the radio a few years ago, smog warnings in Muskoka where unheard of less than 5 years ago.

I expected some kind of fuss, but it seemed to be a new thing that passed relatively unnoticed.

The warnings started coming on hot, muggy days in the height of summer, when typically the warnings are worse for everyone.

Now it appears that they are here in May on a hot but not terribly intense or muggy day (relatively speaking)

With all this talk about global warming, is it man made, is it even an issue, etc etc, I don’t think that anyone can argue that the state of our earth is getting worse. It’s common sense and obvious.

The cause? Pollution of course. But what is the cause of pollution?

It’s apathy. On a grand scale.

Are most people in the “developed nations” – the prime offenders doing their best to cut down on pollution of all kinds? At both a personal and government level.

Not by a long shot.

I’m guilty myself. I am aware and try, but I’m sure that there is more that I can be doing.

That is the first step, being aware. We are so busy in our little bubbles (pardon the pun :0) that it just seems like too much work sometimes to make the environmental choice.

What can you do today? (want an idea? continue making your own natural skin care. Biodegradable ingredients are a much better alternative to synthetics in skin care products which all make their way into the waterways and air as well. It’s almost scary to think about how many synthetics are being washed down the shower drains every day, synthetics that will be with us for a very long time. I am constantly reminded of David and Goliath, it seems so hopeless some days. But take heart. David knocked down the giant :0)

Please post your suggestions and any organizations or resources in the comments section. I would like to put a page together.

I was particularly disturbed by a newspaper article this week stating that the Canadian government was going to allow 40% MORE pestcides on our produce to make it “competitive” with the States. Give me a break!! This is not progress. Oh, and the switch to the new light bulbs – great, I’ll do that, no problem, but what are the big manufacturing polluters willing to do?? Yup, apathy on a grand scale…
